Orangutan Photography Tour

Day 1 — Arrival, River Cruise & First Orangutan Encounter

Iskandar Airport / Hotel · Kumai · Tanjung Harapan Camp · Proboscis Monkey · Night Trekking
Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun (Iskandar Airport) or pickup from your hotel, we escort you directly to Kumai Harbor, approximately 20 minutes away. Here, your adventure begins as you board a traditional klotok houseboat, your floating lodge for the next four nights.

We cruise along the Kumai and Sekonyer Rivers, surrounded by dense mangrove forest and lowland rainforest. Lunch is freshly prepared and served on board while enjoying serene jungle views.

After approximately two hours, we reach Camp Tanjung Harapan, the first orangutan rehabilitation center in the park. A 30-minute jungle trek leads us to the feeding platform, where at 15:00 PM we observe wild orangutans swinging through the canopy and feeding naturally—an unforgettable first photographic moment.

As the afternoon progresses, we continue cruising deeper into the park. Along the riverbanks, we often encounter Proboscis Monkeys, identifiable by their long noses and golden-brown fur, resting in riverside trees.

After dinner on board, we embark on a night trekking experience, guided by spotlight, to observe nocturnal wildlife such as tarsiers, insects, frogs, and owls.

Accommodation: Overnight aboard the klotok.

Day 2 — Camp Leakey Trekking & Iconic Orangutan Photography

Wildlife Spotting · Camp Leakey · Feeding Time · Night Trekking
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We begin the day early, cruising slowly along the riverbanks to spot wildlife in their natural habitat. Early morning is ideal for photographing birds, macaques, and Proboscis Monkeys.

After breakfast, we visit the legendary Camp Leakey, the oldest orangutan rehabilitation center in Borneo, established in 1971 by Dr. Biruté Galdikas.

Here, we undertake a 3–4 hour guided jungle trek, learning about rainforest ecology while searching for wild orangutans, gibbons, hornbills, and reptiles.

Camp Leakey Trekking

Lunch is served aboard the klotok before returning to Camp Leakey at 14:00 PM to join the orangutan feeding session, one of the most iconic wildlife experiences in Indonesia. This moment offers exceptional photography opportunities as orangutans descend from the canopy.

As evening approaches, we cruise to a designated overnight area, once again spotting Proboscis Monkeys along the river. Dinner and overnight on the boat conclude the day.

Day 3 — Pondok Tanggui & Firefly Sanctuary

Morning Trekking · Feeding Platform · Proboscis Monkey · Fireflies
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After early morning wildlife spotting and breakfast, we arrive at Pondok Tanggui Camp, the second orangutan feeding station. A 1–2 hour morning trekking through dense jungle brings us to the feeding platform at 09:00 AM. During the trek, we observe orangutans, gibbons, macaques, and tropical birds, often at close range. The intimate setting of Pondok Tanggui offers a different photographic perspective compared to Camp Leakey.

Lunch is served on board as we continue cruising deeper into the National Park. In the late afternoon, we again observe wildlife and Proboscis Monkeys resting along the riverbanks.

At dusk, the klotok anchors near a Nipa Palm Forest, where—depending on weather conditions—we witness thousands of fireflies illuminating the riverbanks, creating a magical natural light show. Dinner and overnight on board.

Day 4 — Canoeing & Deep Jungle Exploration

Blackwater River · Extended Trekking · Tanjung Harapan Feeding · Fireflies
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The day begins with morning wildlife spotting and breakfast. We then switch to canoes to explore a narrow blackwater jungle river, inaccessible to larger boats. This silent journey offers rare chances to photograph shy wildlife deep within the rainforest.

We continue with an extended 3–4 hour jungle trek, immersing ourselves in untouched forest landscapes. Lunch is served aboard the klotok.

Blackwater River Canoeing

At 15:00 PM, we return to Camp Tanjung Harapan for the final orangutan feeding session, capturing the last photographic moments of these magnificent primates. As evening falls, we cruise to the Nipa Palm area once more, enjoying dinner and observing fireflies before spending our final night aboard the klotok.

Day 5 — Return to Harbor & Departure

Klotok · Kumai Harbor · Airport / Hotel
Meals: Breakfast

After breakfast, we cruise back to Kumai Harbor, where a private transfer brings you to Pangkalan Bun Airport or your hotel for onward travel.

Optional Stopover: En route to the airport, we can arrange a visit to Rumah Betang, a traditional Dayak longhouse in Pasir Panjang Village—an authentic cultural experience and excellent photographic opportunity.
